MM Magazine DPS Final Outcome
This is how my DPS in MM magazine looked like. It was very simple and easy to read making look like most magazines. i stuck to the same scheme and decided to add a lot more images to bring attention to the magazine, since most people prefer looking at images.

I began my double page spread by using the black background as i have done for the previous pages. used an image of the model on the left hand side of the page since it would bring it immediate attention. i used the same colour scheme of Red, Black and White. i also stuck to the same font type, using Onyx and Raavi. i started placing the text boxes where i felt they looked the best. i tried to use as much space as possible and make sure the DPS looked like a Vibe or XXL DPS.

To develop my magazine further i added a shaped box with a small teaser inside making the reader feel the need to read the regulars and features inside the magazine. i decided to move the information of the magazine onto the image of the model. and replace the space in the bottom for images used as features and regulars to give the audience an insight to what they may find in the magazine. i aligned all the information to make it look neat and organised and finished my magazine.

I developed my contents page further by adding in the information and trying out different colours on different words and which ones i felt had to stand out and would bring attention to the magazine and invite the reader in. i decided to stick to the same scheme colours of red, white and black. i stuck to two different fonts. i used the same one for the main text; Onyx. i made small rectangular boxes and adjusted the sizes and placed page numbers in them.

i decided i didn't like the text for the front page so i changed it, However the text was not visible so i changed back to the old english text even though i felt this one looked the best. i also feel like the old text suited my music genre more since it was quite 'Hood' and therefore i decided to stick with it. Also i added a barcode, scanner and a MM-Magazine Web post on my magazine to take up the space and bring attention to the branding. i also added the price and made it quite bright and large in text to make it eye-catching.

I started adding information and i felt that i needed to adjust the alignment of the magazine so i moved the text around to make it look eye-catching but also look neat and organised. i decided the magazine looked empty so i added other cover lines and teasers that would fit well with the magazine. the colours didn't look bright so i adjusted the colours and made the red brighter. i also changed the colour of the text in the skyline because i felt it was dull. The dark colours made it look like a rock magazine so i decided to brighten it up.

I started with the image i was going to use as my front cover. i then decided the image was too dark so i brightened it and adjusted the contrast. i liked the smoky effect the image naturally had due to adjusting the shutter speed however it made the image dark. I then decided to stick to this font and i felt that it looked dull so i developed the font further by changing the texture, bevel and emboss, gradient overlay and pattern overlay. I typed the MM and Magazine separately so i could place the text in this position. I used 2 different fonts for this magazine, i used old english text and Onyx.

MM Magazine DPS Journalistic Writing
How Did It Begin?
Well, i started my career on the streets. i would rap and sing on the streets most of the time but some how i would make my way to underground stations. At first it was hard trying to make money but i just wanted to do what i loved - rap. My parents weren't very supportive at first since it wasn't an easy industry and so i had to make my own way up. Now that i've made it, my parents are very proud of me and thats all i could ask for. i remember waking up for college and spitting my bars, every now and then reciting Tupac’s Verses. The struggle of life was my inspiration. i was born in Hackney and bought up in a rough neighbourhood. i wasn't a bad child, i kept away from gangs and drugs but i found myself through rapping and speaking about how it really was. i wasn't good at school work but i loved my music lessons - my favourite lesson that i would look forward too.
Should Your Parents Have been More Strict or Less?
My parents were very strict - Which i am happy about. If my parents were less strict i don't think i would have pushed myself as far to receive the best out -come. It was the pressure under my parents that helped me get here. i wanted to prove them wrong and i did. To prove myself i was dedicated and it is dedication and strength that got me here. I will agree that it would have been lovely if my parents were supportive and i would feel much better. However their strict teachings kept me on the right path, because of them i didn't take the wrong path as most underground rap artists do.
If You Could Go Back What Would you Do Differently?
If i could go back in time i would definitely try and do better in school and improve my education. i wasted quite a lot of my time not focusing on my studies and just hanging out with my friends. I regret not trying hard in school and college because if i didn't have my music career, where would i be?. This is why i am grateful to my parents i really understand what they felt like and i should have done more for myself. I miss the whole learning environment, education was actually fun - it was great to learn something new everyday. I remember being offered to go on trips, my favourite one has to be when i was offered to go to Dorset, we did a lot of activities and it was the best. i guess i miss the whole excitement of going out and being active, i've become lazy and maybe i'll carry on trying different activities.

Timeline:
9am model meets at studio
9am-9:15 model does hair and makeup and changes clothes
9:15 - 10:10 photoshoot
concept:
A new and upcoming rising artist is making his first single. The shoot shows from the struggle of the artist to the fame he now receives. It shows how well he is doing now and how far he has come and how well he is doing with his career now. The photoshoot gives off a sense of emotional feeling as you feel yourself the struggle the artist has faced but then you later get the feeling of ease as you see the strong path that the artist has taken. I used a white background to show the artist has found his peace but i also changed the shutter speed of the camera to give it a smoky and dark effect to represent the dark times the artist struggled.

Favourite Image
I won't be using this picture as my front cover since the artist is not looking into the camera. However i might use it for my contents or Dps.
i liked this picture since it had the best outcome. i played about with the camera and changed the shutter speed, this also changed the brightness and gave the image a smokey look. Also the image really fits the music genre since image looks quite dark and aggressive representing RnB and Hip Hop.
Also it was a really good shot and really fit well with the music genre.

Task 5 Distribution Methods
Distribution of magazine methods
Sale or Return
This distribution method Is used in
most shops. The distributor Is given a set number of magazines to
retail outlets. If less than the given amount are sold, the rest of
the magazines are sent back. This is expensive for the distributor
because many copies go to waste without profit made. There are also
environmental issues caused by this process, all the paper used for
the unsold magazine is thrown away.
Online publishing
A modern form of magazine
distribution is online publishing. Readers usually participate in a
subscription, which can be paid or for free. One method of online
publishing methods is reading the articles on a website. Another one
is a virtual magazine, which you turn the pages and read the magazine
as you would with a paper magazine. The non subscripted magazines do
not include everything in the magazine that a paying customer would
access. Most recently smart phone apps have introduced apps which
give customers quick updates and promote the magazines. Also with
online publishing no paper costs, placement, distribution costs, , -
pay people to get the magazine to the shops. Online publishing
eliminates cost such as those mentioned also magazines can be
interactive.
Postal subscriptions
postal subscriptions benefit the
publishers since they are generated sales and no copies go to waste.
Postal subscriptions benefit the customer because the magazines are
directly delivered to their houses. Also it is often cheaper buying
every issue separate and they often include gifts for subscriptions.
publisher
Publishers are the institutions that
produce the magazine. In the UK there are four large publishers, and
a number of smaller institutions. The main four are EMAP Bauer,
NatMag, Conde Nast and IPC. Each publisher uses a network of
distributors, who manage the flow of magazines from the printer to
the final news-stand, where the magazine is sold. Magazines are
taken in lorries to regional distributors, who then move these on to
the news stand.
Freemiums
An increasingly popular method of
distribution today is giving out free issues. These are given out at
stations or other busy public locations. These magazines make all
their revenue from advertising.
Ezines
Ezines are different from magazine
websites, in that they are electronic versions of a magazine, with
similar features such as pages that can be turned, adverts, page
numbers. For music magazines, RWD is a good example. ezines are
usually free, and they will have electronic features such as hyper
links redirect the reader to another source.
Apps
Many magazines now have smart phone
apps with some or all of the content available in the hard copy of
the magazine. These may be linked via a smart QR code on the front
cover of a magazine. Most magazines now extend their brand online ,
for example on social networks they have Instagram, Twitter and
Facebook.
Task 5 Magazine News stand
Magazine
newsstand task
I visited my local newsagents store 'Tina's Supermarket' where the music magazines were displayed on the news-stand. Unfortunately there wasn't a variety of music magazines and therefore the magazines in the image are very limited.
My music magazine is RnB, however most of the magazines placed in the front are rock magazines. One of the most popular rock magazines known is kerrang. Kerrang magazine is placed in the centre of the new-stand and right in the front. This gives the designer much more freedom with the layout, hence the magazine Kerrang has the masthead covered. You cant read the masthead but since its a popular magazine everyone is bound to know it. This shows us that designers with popular magazines are allowed to have more fun with the layout. Also the teasers and additional information is important. In this case the most popular rock band is slipknot and their name is placed in the sky-line bringing all the attention to this magazine.
Also as we look at the magazines, they are all layered on top of one another portraying the left half of the magazine. As we look closely at them we are able to see all the important information is on the left side this conveys that most designers place the important information on the left side as this is the first part that we look at.
As we look closer, the rock magazines are the most popular since they are placed in the centre and front. The Hip-hop and Blues&Souls magazines are placed beside the rock magazine however are in the front, this portrays they are popular magazines and eye-catching grabbing the attention of readers. Also the magazines are all placed in the same pattern with the same genres. However the unpopular magazines within the same genre are placed behind them. This tells us that the unpopular magazines are placed in the back and this makes the designers of the magazine more cautious of the Masthead since they have to be extra eye-catching to catch the attention of buyers.

Evaluation
Three key points for developing my music magazine I would use colours the fit the theme and stick to a strict colour scheme therefore it would make my music magazine look realistic and better. Another key point for developing my magazine I would use a lot more teasers since the magazine looked quite simple, also most people who read my magazine felt that it could have had more information. The last development I would make to my music magazine would be a wider range of fonts since the readers felt that the magazine looked quite simple and the fonts used didn't bring much attention to the music magazine.
What went well?
Personally I think that the photography was my favourite part
and the pictures came out pretty good. I think I have gained good knowledge on
how to make photos appear good since the quality wasn’t as good however I think
I took good photos. I think the image manipulation went well since the pictures
look brighter and aligned nicely. Also I think that the contents page layout
was good since it was neat and organised. I think that the text was the best
part since a lot of time went into it and it was very well done. I think that
the journalism was good and I used a lot of persuasive text to bring the reader
in. I think the layout in InDesign was better done, the text was aligned and it
looked more like a college magazine.
Improvements
To improve my magazine I would use better colours since
people felt that the colour scheme clashed. Also I would add more pictures
since there wasn't enough and this made the magazine less attractive. Also I would add a variety of images since this would make my magazine look better.
Also I would use a better font for the text since it wasn't very appealing and
a better font would make it look less simple. Also to improve my magazine further
I could add more teaser/cover lines to make the magazine look full and
interesting.

College Magazine Front cover Case study
College Lifestyle Magazine Analysis
Audience for this
college magazine would be for a student or even parent audience. This is
because students would like to see what is going on in their college by reading
the college magazine. However I also feel that a parent would like to read a
college magazine to see whether the college has good standards.
The shot taken for
this image is medium close up. And the model for this magazine is in the centre
of the framing, this brings all the attention to him. Personally, I think that
mise-en-scene fits the college magazine since the model is using props such as
school books, formal clothing however has a hint of fashion promoting the way a
teenager dresses. Bright colours are used to portray the vibrant side of
teenagers however black is used to promote the maturity in colleges.
The Largest font (Masthead)
is used for the branding of the magazine, in This case the magazine is called
College Lifestyle. The main cover line relates to the person on the cover. ‘Dancehall’s
Bright Future’. Therefore an anchorage is used since the text gives the image
meaning and vice versa. The skyline has additional information for exclusive
events. Teasers are used to invite the readers in and to bring attention to
certain events taking place.
Vibe Front cover analysis
The Title is used in Masthead, the largest Font to show the magazines branding. The font is strong and bold reflecting the theme of the image. A king is usually strong and bold. All the information is towards the left this is because psychologically our minds read from left to right and therefore the text on the audience invites the audience in so that they read the teasers and additional information. The Main cover line fits with image. A skyline is used, the additional information is of Featured Artist in the magazine inviting the audience in so that they continue reading the magazine.
Vibe Contents Page analysis
Only
some editorials are listed in the magazine.
There
are 8 sections in the Magazine, which are; serve and volley, wrath of the Math,
The Passion of Chris, Rookie of the year, and Death of a salesman, Twin
Killing, They Got Balls, Young Forever and a splash of masculinity. The
sections have been organized into one column and are in short small paragraphs
and square text boxes. They have been
placed under a sub-heading written in bold for each section. They also have
been aligned into a straight line next to the image of Chris Brown.
The
image used is of the artist Chris Brown. The image shot is a long shot however
not showing the whole body of the artist. The lighting is not bright and is a
black and white image. The image connotation shows power and strength which
reflects the front covers image and shows the similarities between the two. The
anchorage used of the Text 'Splash of Masculinity' since the image represents
the same message.
The
written piece is about the opinions of the artist on the use of the internet
and technology allowing artist to become famous and share their music with
everyone worldwide. The beginning is about the Artists opinions on sharing
music on the internet. The middle is about his career and what he has been
working on: new music and projects. The ending is about the Artists opinions on
his own work and how he feels about his music.
The
language used is very formal however I feel targets a young adult and teenage
audience due to the use of the artist’s opinions being used quite often. I also
feel that it targets audience of young adults trying to make their own music
because they share the same opinions as the artists and could relate to it.
The
article has been laid out into 3 columns. The first column is written in a
large paragraph whereas the others are written as small paragraphs. They are
all aligned in a straight line and the magazine looks very neat and organized.
Teasers have been used in the skyline to invite the audience to read this
section on the magazine.
The
image shot is a medium shot. The lighting is bright and the lack of colors
brings all the attention to the artist and therefore portraying he is the main
attraction. It also brings a connection between the written piece and the
image.

XXL Front Cover Analysis
The first magazine which I will be analysing is the XXL
Magazine. The image on the front cover is mainly a head shot however his arm
and upper half of his body is visible therefore it looks like a medium close up.
The image of the artist Chris Brown is placed in the centre to grab the
attention of the audience. This image has been placed in the centre so it is
very eye-catching. The mise-en-scene fits the image very well, since the colour
red portrays danger and Chris Browns music is very dangerous to some extent.
Also danger brings awareness to people and therefore the colour used invites
the readers in. The lighting used is very bright and important since it
reflects the genre of music, which is RnB. The costumes used fit the
mise-en-scene since the props reflect the dangerous vibe. For instance the use of
grills and chunky gold jewellery makes the artist look dangerous and rough
fitting the RnB theme. No make-up has
been used however the use of Tattoos exemplifies the theme and makes the artist
look dangerous and fits the colour scheme well.
The denotation of the image is a male artist, who looks very
rough and dangerous. The expression used exemplifies the aggressive nature in
RnB music. The image also makes the audience see the connection between the uses
of colours. The connotation of the image makes us feel excited and makes the
audience want to continue to read the magazine.
The Largest Font is used for the magazines name in Masthead.
Also The Main cover Line is the artist’s name this is an anchorage. Usually
magazines use skylines to give out additional information on artists featured
in the magazine However in XXL the featured artists have been listen in the
background, giving all the immediate attention to the main artist on the front
cover. Also usually RnB magazines have Teasers to give the audience additional
information however in XXL No teasers are used for featured artists, only for
Chris Brown portraying he is the most important at this moment in time and is
exclusively the one to read.
XXL contents page Analysis.
One page is used for the contents page.
Not All the editorial items are listed and the
page numbers are also listed.
There are seven sections and they are Little
Friend, Growing Pains, Over Here Hustlin', The Leak, Change The Game, One and
Only and can I live?. The sections have been aligned into one column. The
sections have been put in order since they go up in number order for each
section. All sections have been placed in one straight column. The sub-headings
are in bold to bring attention to them therefore the audience are easily able
to pick out parts that they would wish to read. Also each section has been
placed into small square text boxes to keep them short and organized therefore
they are easier to read.
The XXL contents page has used one image of
two artists. The shot type used is a medium shot. This shot makes the audience
more able to see the use of props. The props exemplify the front covers
mise-en-scene. This is because both images represent the rough and dangerous
lifestyle and fit the theme. The connotations of the image and text remind us
of the dangerous and rough life style. For instance the text 'Growing Pains'
portrays the dangerous and rough lifestyle. Therefore the contents page
reflects the front cover since they are both giving off the same connotations.
XXL Double Page Spread
The piece is about Cassie and what is taking
place in her life. This section is on her life; what new albums are coming out,
what new projects she has been working on. It is also about the latest songs
she has featured in, The latest events she has been at and it’s all about the
new music she is working on. The beginning is about what she has done. The
middle is on about how she feels about the music industry and her feelings and
emotion on her music and what she has done. The ending is on what she is
working on.
The tone used is quite strong and the language
used is formal. I feel that this targets an audience of an adult teen age. Also
I feel that it targets an audience with an audience that enjoys strong music
and has a good understanding of the rough and dangerous lifestyle. I also feel
that it targets an audience which prefer 'Hood Music' since they live in the
same situations that artists have.
The article has been laid out in a paragraph
format. One page is used for the written piece and the other page
Is used of the artist the article is about. A
Title is used to emphasis the opinions of the artist this is also a
Teaser for the audience and underneath the
title there is a paragraph with additional information and below that is a pull
quote from the artist.
The image used in the Dps is quite provocative
and is used for the young male audience. The image brings attention to the
text. Also an anchorage is used, 'Talk is cheap' therefore Cassie is using
action rather than talk, since talk is cheap. The shot used is a long shot and
is full body, this shows everything which is used for the attention of the male
audience.

Piracy Killing the Industry?
Piracy Killing The Industry?
Firstly, more than 7 billion people use illegal downloading. All the pirating has bought down the country economically and has created a great economic crisis in the music industry. Websites like www.flvto.com or www.youtube2mp3.net allow illegal downloading to occur and create big losses in the economy.Artist like Lily Allen feel that the artist is being ripped off and it is unfair and has decided to support the government in removing illegal downloading websites. However artist like Shakira feel that piracy is acceptable because she feels that fans appreciate her enough to listen to her music, she also feels that illegal downloading brings awareness to her music and any upcoming star. Chris Ruen felt that a lot of time and hard work is spent went artist make their music. He was shocked to see the effort put into music and the little outcome which they received through payment. Also torrents have been put up like LimeWire and Napster to enable the security of other artists music and prevent it to be stolen.
The music industry spends several of dollars into promoting the next superstar however if piracy was removed, the superstar wouldn't grab as much attention and therefore it would create a bigger loss in the industries profit. However on the other hand Artists and the music industry believe that every illegal download is equivalent to a lost sale.
People against piracy also believe that if customers bought their music rather than steal it, less money would be spent and put in towards tours and merchandise. People who are for piracy and illegal downloading also believe that a lot of money goes into the gaming industry. Statistics show that the gaming industry went up from 1.18 billion to 4.03 billion in the past 10 years this expresses that people prefer to spend their money on games therefore to blame the loss of profit in the music industry on piracy is entirely unfair.
Also before illegal downloading was introduced people would record the latest hits from the radio onto their cassettes or burn music onto their CDs, this is another way of looking piracy, however still did take place and would do it often. Therefore illegal downloading takes place and everyone does it so there shouldn't be an issue with illegal downloading.
Concluding piracy doesn't have all negative and in some aspects helps the music industry. Also illegal downloading is unfair because it is equivalent to stealing someone else’s hard work.
Personally, i feel that illegal downloading is not destroying the industry since it is bringing awareness to other artists and brings them fame. this is where most of the industries money is made from and therefore the industry are doing perfectly fine whilst illegal downloading is taking place.
